Welland House Hotel Under Renovations

Once known as the Welland House Hotel, this building on the corner of Ontario and King Streets in St. Catharines was built in 1853. It opened in 1856 and has had visits by Mrs. Abraham Lincoln and Mrs. Robert E. Lee.

“The city was a real destination for many famous Americans.” says museum volunteer Linda Kurki in a recent newspaper interview.

Unlike now, when Canadians flock south to escape the winter cold, Americans would come north to get away from the summer heat.

The Welland House Hotel went bankrupt in 1993 and became the Downtown Student Residence in 1994.

I took this photo last Sunday when painters were on scaffolds finishing the exterior of the building.
