Toronto to Niagara Falls by Bike

On September 5th, 2010, at 6:15 am, six friends decided to travel by bike from from Lawrence and Dufferin area in Toronto to Niagara Falls.  They arrived in Niagara Falls at 6:24pm the next day.  This is a video of their adventure:

They used the Waterfront Trail for the majority of the ride. The route is not the most direct route to Niagara Falls but it is the most scenic, and well marked with signs.  The route is a little more confusing in the Hamilton area but if you get lost just ask for directions.  Hamiltonians will gladly help you as long as you are not wearing an Argonaut t-shirt.

If you decide to visit Niagara-on-the Lake and some of the wineries, you can exit the Waterfront Trail and then rejoin the Niagara River Recreational Trail to continue your trip to Niagara Falls.  The trip should take you a day and about 200 km.

What to Bring:

  1. Waterfront Trail Map
  2. Niagara River Recreational Trail Map
  3. Padded Bike Seats
  4. GPS
  5. Speedometer to track distance and speed
  6. Tune Your Bike and Check for Safety
  7. Snacks and Water
  8. Bike Tool Kit

I was one of the riders re: Toronto to Niagara Falls…on bicycle…you have the correct departure time, however, the arrival time was the next day. I think you should make that clear, just in case there are people out there that want to try it.

I did the trail from Niagara falls to Toronto yesterday. Although it was fairly hot the cycling time to complete the ride was 5 1/2 hours. I was on a road bike with 110 psi in the tires which certainly helps on long distances. The route is well marked although I found that some of the small detours on gravel were a bit of an annoyance. Great effort on the part of the municipalities who set up the trail!

Hi there, I am riding to Niagara Falls with some friends on October 20th. What routes did you take, mike especially, given we are also aiming for about 5.5 hours and on road bikes?

    Hi Kevin,

Your video of the trip was great giving an idea of the trail. My husband and I are coming to Toronto (from Fredericksburg, VA) in July and thinking of biking down to Niagara Falls. It would take us 2 to 3 days and we would do lodging in each 30 – 40 mile/day. We would have a bike shop deliver our baggage to stops and have to get a ride back to Toronto to retrieve our car. What is an estimate of the temperature there in July and do you know of a Bike Shop that would help us do that. Or is there a ferry from Niagara Falls – Toronto?
