$10 for a Wine Country Touring Pass ($20 Value)

Grape juice magically transforms into wine in the same way milk becomes cheese and a 1972 Dodge Dart becomes an even older 1972 Dodge Dart. Tipple the tasty transformation with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get a Wine Country Touring Pass (a $20 value). Your Groupon can be used at all four of the following locations: Peller Estates, on John Street East, Niagara-on-the-Lake; Hillebrand Winery, on Niagara Stone Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake; Thirty Bench Wine Makers, on Mountainview Road, Beamsville; and Wine Country Vintners, on Queen Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The vineyards of Niagara’s wineries offer guests an inside look at their wine-crafting practices, including grape selection and cultivation. The full-day tour reveals all of the necessary steps each winery takes in preparing its signature libations, with each tour culminating in a wine tasting, sure to please the palate and nurture appreciation for the sacrifices of selfless grapes throughout history. To redeem this deal, simply visit the wineries of your choice and present today’s Groupon to frolic in the vinous depths of oenophilic education.

TasteCamp Niagara 2011

TasteCamp is coming to Niagara in 2011.  The concept for TasteCamp is a simple one: getting enthusiastic journalists and bloggers together in a region that is new to them to taste as much wine as possible and speak to as many winemakers as possible over the course of a weekend. Most smaller, lesser-known wine regions in the world would love to get their wines in front new audiences, it can be a challenge. With TasteCamp, the new audience comes to them. This is not a junket — attendees pay their own travel expenses — including for their hotel rooms — and meals. Through generous sponsors, some meals may be deeply discounted.

New York Wineries Upset with Canada

wineIf a customer with a Canadian accent comes to Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars in Hammondsport, Fred Frank knows they’re there to taste, not to buy.

That’s because it wouldn’t make financial sense.

Canadians who visit any of New York’s 255 wineries are allowed to bring home two bottles per person duty-free. But the price of wine bought in the U.S. almost doubles with duties and excise taxes imposed by the Ontario government if a Canadian returns home with more than two bottles.

Meanwhile, New Yorkers can fill the trunk of their car with bottles from the wineries that dot the northern side of Lake Ontario and pay insignificant taxes when they cross the border on their return home. The first two bottles also are duty-free.

“It’s bothersome because it’s unfair and it’s the antithesis of free trade,” said Frank, part owner of the winery. “For us, even though we are not close to the border, Toronto is closer than New York City.”

Mike Weir Winery Plans Delayed

mike weir wineIt’s been nearly five years since Canadian pro golfer Mike Weir launched his line of Niagara wines, and still he has no place to call home.

No official Weir winery for the PGA player’s fans to make a pilgrimage.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way.

When Weir first launched his brand with then-partners Peter Jensen and his wife Laura McCain-Jensen in spring 2005, there was talk of building a retail store in St. Davids.

But Weir and the Jensens broke up in 2008, and the golfer partnered instead with Chateau des Charmes Winery in St. Davids to make his Chardonnay, Cabernet Merlot and other wines.

Still, no winery of his own.

But in November 2008, Weir and his winery president, Barry Katzman, unveiled plans to build a winery mecca on a 15-acre parcel of land next to the Whirlpool Golf Course in Niagara Falls. The shovels were expected to be in the ground last summer. No dirt has moved yet.

Trouble is this public course is operated by the embattled Niagara Parks Commission.

The self-financing provincial tourism agency has come under fire for months for giving Maid of the Mist tour boat operators a 25-year contract extension without taking competitive bids.

Founder of Magnotta Dies

Originally published by: St. Catharines Standard

magnottawineryIn the Ontario wine industry, Gabe Magnotta was a maverick.

As head of Magnotta Winery Corp., he was the guy that took on the giants, such as the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, and won.

When the provincial alcohol retailer refused him shelf space when he opened in 1990, Magnotta and his wife, Rossana, fought back and found a way to open seven of their own stores across the Greater Toronto Area to sell products directly to consumers at cut-rate prices. more…
