Located at 350 Lakeshore Road in Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada, Old Fort Erie is approximately 30 kilometres (19 miles) or a scenic 20-minute drive south of Niagara Falls and is close to the Peace Bridge from Buffalo, New York. The grounds and the main floor rooms of the buildings are wheelchair accessible.

Niagara Parks is preparing to celebrate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. Plans are being made for special events beginning in 2012, and construction has begun on a brand new Welcome Centre for Old Fort Erie. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting new chapter at the Fort!

Old Fort Erie is one of several heritage sites owned and operated by The Niagara Parks Commission, an agency of the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture, which has preserved and protected the Niagara River corridor without taxpayers’ dollars since 1885.

Golf and support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara

Niagara Falls Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a variety of mentoring programs for children and youth throughout our community. It’s their goal as an organization to work towards providing a mentor to every child in need of a mentor in Niagara Falls. To address the growing need for volunteer mentors, BBBS has increased their volunteer recruitment efforts, streamlined our intake process, and added a variety of new Mentoring programs to meet the changing needs of volunteers. These strategies have resulted in a significant increase in children participating in programs over the last few years. In 2007, over 190 children were involved in one of our programs. Last year, we offered services to over 100 additional children, which means that close to 300 children in our community were impacted by the presence of a caring, volunteer mentor.

However, Big Brothers Big Sisters still has a lot of work to do. They have close to 50 children on our waiting list, some of whom have been waiting for close to 18 months. There are several schools waiting for BBBS to be in a position where they can offer one of our popular School Based programs to their students. In short, there are many children still waiting for that special person to make a difference in their lives. As John Crosbie said, “A mentor is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.” We want to make a difference in the lives of these children.

You can help! – The 2010 Golf For Kids Sake is one of our most crucial fundraising events every year. This golf tournament helps us raise close to $30,000 annually, which in turn helps us find more volunteers to support those children in our community in need of a mentor.

Please consider joining us this year, as we strive to fill our tournament, and increase our sponsorship levels.

Stone Road Grille’s Food Day Menu

Food Day was founded in 2003 as The World’s Longest BBQ in response to the sanction of Canada’s beef exports by our largest trading partner and the dramatic hardship it imposed on our agricultural community. The BBQ was a huge success and has evolved into Food Day, an annual mid-summer celebration when we share Canada’s rich culinary heritage, our delicious northern bounty and the best managed food system on the planet.

Is Niagara Parks Commission taking a shot at Toronto?

The Niagara Falls add campaign, funded by local businesses, is seen as taking shots at Toronto.  What do you think?

We Have a Winner

The winner of the Stupid Tourist Contest is Jen.  Jen has won 2 Niagara Falls Tour tickets courtesy of eTours.to.  She won by submitting this story:

“Working at the lobby counter in one of the hotels on the falls we once had an irate woman come down to report someone on the custodial staff had obviously tampered with her cell phone. Apparently, when she turned her phone on that day she was dismayed to find some prankster had written then name “Roger” into her display. Well she was just livid and we were lucky she had the presence of mind to inform us rather than go straight to the police as she is sure a dignified hotel chain like ours would hate the bad publicity we would be sure to recieve if this ever got out. What’s worse, she couldn’t seem to get rid of this “Roger business” and feared anyone capable of such hijinks may not have stopped at just that and if we thought she was going to be responsible for any long distance charges well didn’t we have another thing coming!

I think we all deserved medals for maintaining our “professional faces” while we explained to her Roger’s is a Canadian cellular company and her phone will switch back as soon as she returns to the USofA. Not gonna lie though, I did experience that twinge of Schadenfreude as she muttered an apology and slinked back to the elevators. ;oP”

A Letter To Dalton McGuinty Premier of Ontario

harper-mcguinty-456

Protect our Parks, an activist blog dedicated to protecting the Parks of Southern Ontario, has published this letter to the Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty.

——-

March 2, 2010

The Honourable Dalton McGuinty Premier of Ontario

This letter will be emailed and served by Registered Mail

Re: Reasonable Apprehension of Bias in Maid of Mist Lease Negotiations

Sir.

First, please let me tell you the reason for this whole letter. It is an embarrassment to the people of the Province of Ontario and your Provincial Government to have allowed the present Board of Commissioners and General Manager of the Niagara Parks Commission to still remain in their present positions with what you and the citizens already know.

Second, I fear that if you respond to this letter you will give me a standard explanation that you are forwarding this to Minister Chan, Tourism Minister. To pass the buck again to a new Tourism Minister who has done nothing to improve the credibility of your Government, nor show the people that the process will be fair, is negligence on your behalf. You already know some of the conflicts and dirty inner workings of the Niagara Parks Commission through this ordeal and you choose not to take control and be a leader, but to hope we all go away. That’s not going to happen unless we are assured a fair, unbiased tendering is done that is transparent in its selection.

Here are some of the facts:

1. The Chairman (Jim Williams) and General Manager (John Kernahan) of NPC were involved in a meeting with the CEO of IMAX in fall of 2006 where an option was presented that IMAX will
build a new attraction at Table Rock fully financed by IMAX. This meeting and all information was suppressed from the Niagara Parks Commissioners and never exposed until I was told in May of
2008. In the mean time the NPC borrowed $38 million to renovate Table Rock and build the attraction “Fury” which has been exposed to be a dismal failure.

Best tour guides to any area are locals

Rent a Friend niagara

Are you vacationing to Niagara Falls any time soon and planning on taking a tour of the area? Be prepared for sticker shock when you see how much some of the tours cost!

Of course there are many reasons you would go with a large tour company when visiting the area. Perhaps you would like to go on a boat tour, or a helicopter ride. Obviously for a tour of that caliber it would be necessary to hire a professional company to show you around Niagara.

But what about if you just wanted to go site seeing? Some of the local tours in Niagara charge anywhere from $75-$150 per person for a 3-4 hour tour. So for an average family of 2 adults and 2 children you can expect to pay between $300-$600! Not only are you paying a lot of money for someone to show you around the area, but you will most likely be with a large group of people as well. Having a large group while site seeing is not always a plus. It can take longer to explore areas with a large group, and you don’t have a say if you want to skip a specific part of the tour.

If you are looking to have the tour of your life and see things you want to see, then going with a tour company might not be your best option. A better option you may want to consider would be to hire a local that lives in Niagara or even a retired tour guide from the area. more…

Niagara Falls Library owed $464k in fines – officials unaware

niagaraThe Niagara Falls Public Library has hired a collection agency to go after $464,494 in unpaid fines after state auditors found that officials were unaware of the amount patrons owed.

An audit by the office of State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli released Tuesday faulted the library for using an accounting system that did not give officials a full picture of how much was owed in unpaid fines.

In addition, auditors found, the library could not account for $6,967 in fines collected during a two-year period.

“Because of the poor internal controls and lack of accountability,” auditors wrote, “library officials do not have assurance that all cash collected by library employees is appropriately accounted for.” more…

Mike Weir Winery Plans Delayed

mike weir wineIt’s been nearly five years since Canadian pro golfer Mike Weir launched his line of Niagara wines, and still he has no place to call home.

No official Weir winery for the PGA player’s fans to make a pilgrimage.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way.

When Weir first launched his brand with then-partners Peter Jensen and his wife Laura McCain-Jensen in spring 2005, there was talk of building a retail store in St. Davids.

But Weir and the Jensens broke up in 2008, and the golfer partnered instead with Chateau des Charmes Winery in St. Davids to make his Chardonnay, Cabernet Merlot and other wines.

Still, no winery of his own.

But in November 2008, Weir and his winery president, Barry Katzman, unveiled plans to build a winery mecca on a 15-acre parcel of land next to the Whirlpool Golf Course in Niagara Falls. The shovels were expected to be in the ground last summer. No dirt has moved yet.

Trouble is this public course is operated by the embattled Niagara Parks Commission.

The self-financing provincial tourism agency has come under fire for months for giving Maid of the Mist tour boat operators a 25-year contract extension without taking competitive bids.
