St. Catharines Dry Cleaners Robbed

On Thursday February 7, 2008, at approximately 5:10 p.m., a male suspect entered York Cleaners, located at 179 York Street in St. Catharines. The male approached a female employee and sprayed her in the face with an aerosol spray. The female victim was immediately disoriented from the effects of the spray. The male ran to the cash register and took an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing the area of the store on foot. The victim managed to secure a telephone and ran outside the front of the store and began yelling for help.

Several area residents heard the woman’s cries for help and came to her assistance until police and ambulance arrived minutes later. The victim was transported to hospital by ambulance, where she treated and released. Based on an examination of the scene, investigators believe the victim was sprayed with Oleoresin Capsicum spray, commonly known as pepper spray.

As a result of information received from witnesses and residents in the area of the robbery, detectives from the #1 District Street Crime Unit were able to identify the suspect. Police subsequently located the suspect at a residence approximately 1 kilometer from the scene.

A 16-year-old male was arrested without incident and is charged with armed robbery. A quantity of cash was recovered. In accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the suspect cannot be identified.

The male suspect remains in custody pending a Bail Hearing.
