Search Continues for Body of Girl in Niagara River

From the Buffalo News:

State Parks Police and the Erie County Sheriff’s Department helicopter continued to search the shores of the lower Niagara River and Lake Ontario today for the body of a 12-year-old Bronx girl.

State Parks Police Lt. Patrick Moriarty said the recovery effort would continue at least through Tuesday if the body of Magdalena Lubowska is not found today.

“Tomorrow we’re going to do the same thing we’ve been doing,” Moriarty said. “I’m hopeful that there may be some closure on this today or tomorrow.”

Lubowska slipped from a rock and fell into the rapids of the lower Niagara River during a hike Wednesday in the Niagara Gorge with 22 other youths who were staying at an unlicensed “summer camp” in Niagara Falls.

Lubowska’s parents, who had traveled to Niagara Falls last week after she disappeared into the water, have returned to New York City, Moriarty said.

Moriarty said officers began a foot patrol at dawn in the Niagara Gorge. The Erie County helicopter also searched along the shores of Lake Ontario on Sunday and this morning.

Water patrols from the U.S. Coast Guard and the regularly scheduled Whirlpool Jet Boat tours are also aiding in the search, Moriarty said.

A State Police helicopter is scheduled to conduct another search this afternoon.
