Fatal Fire In St.Catharines

NRPS Media Release

On Saturday January 5, 2008, at approximately 10:22 am, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service and the St.Catharines Fire Services responded to a house fire at a residence on Greenwood Avenue, in the City of St. Catharines.

Investigation revealed that a 71-year-old female was able to escape from the residence prior to the arrival of emergency services, however, an 84-year-old male remained inside the residence.

The St. Catharines Fire Services subsequently entered the residence and located the male resident with vital signs absent. Attempts to revive the male were unsuccessful and the victim was later pronounced dead by the Coroner, who was requested to attend the scene.

The female resident of the house was transported by ambulance to the St.Catharines General Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and later released.

The fire was extinguished, however the single-family dwelling sustained extensive damage as a result of the fire, estimated at approximately $100,000.00. Foul play is not suspected at this time.

A post-mortem examination will be performed on the deceased on Monday January 7th, 2008, at the St.Catharines General Hospital, to determine an exact cause of death.

The cause and origin of the fire is unknown at this time, and the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office and the Niagara Regional Coroner’s Office are conducting further investigation.

At the request of the family the name of the deceased is being withheld.
