Environmental Film Fest A Good Idea For NOTL?

Clipped From The Niagara Falls Review

Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor Gary Burroughs has teamed up with a group that includes representatives from Osprey Media and National Geographic to work on bringing a film festival that focuses on environmental issues to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Burroughs and other local residents are on the board of directors of the Niagara Natural World Film Festival, which hopes to provide a combination of films and lectures for a seven- to- 10-day event in 2009.

“It will not be doom and gloom,” Burroughs said, but rather “positive things small communities and the world can do” about environmental issues.

At a committee of the whole meeting this week, the lord mayor said an environmental film festival held in Washington has grown from 2,000 people a few years ago to 20,000 now.

He said he would like to see the event held in May or September in Niagara-on-the-Lake to provide maximum benefits for local hotels and restaurants.

The committee agreed to endorse in principle his request that the town act as the fiscal agent for the film festival board for its grant application to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for start-up funding.
