Crash Claims Niagara’s 31st Fatality Of 2007

NRPS Media Release

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Monday, December 31st, 2007, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service, Thorold Fire Services, and the Niagara Emergency Medical Services responded to reports of a serious motor vehicle collision on Beaverdams Road just west of Decew Road in the City of Thorold, Ontario.

Initial investigation revealed that a 23-year-old Port Colborne, Ontario female was operating a 1993 Honda Prelude eastbound on Beaverdams Road. As she approached Decew Road she lost control of her Honda and slid along the slush covered roadway across the centre line into the path of an oncoming 2004 International boom-truck leased by Ontario Hydro which was driven westbound on Beaverdams Road by a 53-year-old Niagara Falls, Ontario man. The front of the International came into collision with the passenger side of the Honda.

The 23-year-old Port Colborne female was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the International was uninjured in the collision. Both drivers were the lone occupants of their respective vehicles, and their identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The collision resulted in the International rolling onto its right side into the north drainage ditch. As a precaution, the Ministry of the Environment was notified regarding spilled vehicle fluids.

This collision remains under investigation by members of the Niagara Regional Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit. Any witnesses are requested to contact investigators at 905-688-
4111, extension 5500.
