I was saddened to hear the sad news by phone yesterday morning. A short time later, I drove down to see the destruction for myself. The parking lot was bustling with activity. Firemen and fire trucks were filling the parking lot so I drove on by. I used to work at the store (left in 2000) but was actually one of the people who worked on the renovation inside. A bunch of us who worked there renovated the store with Bob and Leo. The highlight of the "extensive makeover" described on the website was the acoustic guitar room - the cedar panelled room where the fire actually started was located where the repair area was formerly. The long L shaped sales counters were also in this spot before the renovation. It's a sad time for Thorold Music staff and to Moretti family as I believe today marks the 2 year anniversary of the passing of Bob Moretti - one of the two brothers who owned the store. After passing the store on my way home tonight (the day after the fire) the magnitude of the damage is brought to light. What I believe are generators power what look to be a dozen or so worklights hanging from the blackened ceiling. It looks like the entire store will have to be completely redone on the inside. I was told by an associate of the store earlier today who'd visited the gutted store briefly that "they've lost everything" inside... It's a real shame. I don't remember working in a place quite like that before or since. Working for Bob and Leo I felt a sense that everyone cared about the place and each other, it was sort of like a family. I look forward to seeing Thorold Music rise from the ashes stronger and better than ever. They are a well known and well respected business in our community, we need more of them. As the business owner myself, my heart goes out to them down there.
