Big Bucks/My Cottage Internal Theft

NRPS Media Release – February 10, 2008

On September 20th 2007, the Niagara Regional Police Service commenced an investigation into a number of internal thefts as reported by two local businesses. These businesses, identified as Big Bucks Mountain Lodge located at 30 Ontario St. St. Catharines and My Cottage located at 16 Lock St. St. Catharines fall under the same ownership umbrella, and as a result often employ the same staff.

The investigation started after bookkeeping staff, tasked with the tallying of daily receipts noted a variety of accounting irregularities at both properties. Management, upon learning of these issues subsequently contacted the police. Investigation revealed that commencing in September of 2006, the General Manager who was employed to oversee operations at both Big Bucks and My Cottage had been skimming the daily cash receipts to the tune of approximately $23,000.

On February 9th 2008, Detectives with the Criminal investigation Branch arrested a St. Catharines resident, identified as 29 year-old Matthew Stewart. Stewart is facing 2 counts of Theft over $5000.00, 2 counts of Uttering a Forged Document and 1 count of Theft under $5000.00. The later charge is as a result of the locating and seizing of a bottle of alcohol that the accused had in his possession at the time of arrest. This bottle of alcohol was later determined to be the property of Big Bucks.
