Niagara Falls Library owed $464k in fines – officials unaware

niagaraThe Niagara Falls Public Library has hired a collection agency to go after $464,494 in unpaid fines after state auditors found that officials were unaware of the amount patrons owed.

An audit by the office of State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli released Tuesday faulted the library for using an accounting system that did not give officials a full picture of how much was owed in unpaid fines.

In addition, auditors found, the library could not account for $6,967 in fines collected during a two-year period.

“Because of the poor internal controls and lack of accountability,” auditors wrote, “library officials do not have assurance that all cash collected by library employees is appropriately accounted for.” more…

Curtain of secrecy lifting to reveal secrets inside Niagara Parks Commission

First of all, congratulations to Niagara Parks Commissioners for voting in favour of opening their meetings to the public and the media. Quite a novel idea for public lands, we guess.

Vince Kerrio made the motion that was supported by his colleagues. This was the right thing to do and should have been done a long time ago. This newspaper has been calling for this type of openness and transparency for years.

But Kerrio’s rationale for calling the vote – because he felt he (and fellow commissioners) have been unjustly criticized lately -is curious, to say the least.

Cyber Moday Sales

cybermonday2009

Keep you eyes open for a serge of internet sales following Black Friday.  Many online retailer try to take advantage of the momentum by offering huge discounts on the weekend and Monday following Black Friday.  This phenomenon  is dubbed Cyber Moday. This event gives Canadians, who did not get a chance to do some cross border shopping, the chance to participate in the savings found in the US.

You will come across retailers who still do not ship to the Canada, but don’t be disappointed.   We have a solution.  You can now have package shipped to a US address and than forwarded to Canada.  I know of two such services. MyUS.com which is being promoted by PayPal, is offering no set-up fee and a discount to 15% to Canadians. The other is Borderlinx which is available to US and UK customers and is offering Canadian Visa Credit Card  customers a 15% discount.

That being said here is a list of online shops that I found on RedFlagDeals.com that service Canadians and will likely have great deals: more…

Border Crossing Wait Times

If you are planning a shopping trip to Buffalo, Niagara Falls, or Toronto keep visiting NiagaraBlog.com. We will be featuring a series of posts that will save you time and money.

Travellers interested in a cross border shopping spree are probably contemplating which border crossing to take. You have 3 options; the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls; the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge in Queenston; or the Peace Bridge in Buffalo. The wait times for these vary so you should check which crossing to take right before you depart. The two most reliable websites are:

USA: Niagara Falls Bridge Commission

Canada: Border Crossing Times

These are great resources, however to get live up to the minute information we recommend that you use your mobile phone and the Government of Canada Web Poratal ( www.wap.gc.ca).

To access border crossing wait times information just follow these easy steps on your WAP enabled phone.

1. With your phone go to www.wap.gc.ca

2. Choose Services

UFO Over Niagara Falls

Flashing Lights = Aliens?

It’s probably Ruedi Hafen taking his helicopter for a late night flight.  Whatever it was it was newsworthy enough to make it on WKBW news.

Maid of the Mist Closes

October 25th will be the final day the Maid of the Mist will be running this year, but it will be back for at least 25 more years. Earlier this month  the Niagara Parks Commission extended the lease to the America company for another 25 years.  There is controversy around this deal because the offer was not offered to the public in a standard bid process.  Apparently some investors would have paid $100 million higher for the lease if they were given the chance.

Marketing Niagara Falls Internationally

null
The Canadian Tourism Commission has taken a new approach in marketing Canada as a vacation destination.   They are targeting free independent travelers through blogs and videos.  Recently they sponsored 8 well known bloggers from South Korea to visit and write about  Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.

The first to visit Ontario was Won Kyun Chun.  She has already posted a few stories.  Jin Hyun Han, Kum Ran Son, Yong-Chul Kim, Sang Gu Jung, Ja Young Lee and Won Goo Kang will follow.

I can’t wait to see what they have to say about Niagara Falls.
