Think of romantic Canadian cities and Niagara Falls likely tops many people’s lists.
Not according to Amazon.ca.
The online retailer this week declared Saskatoon as Canada’s most romantic community. Even more odd is the fact Niagara Falls didn’t even make the top 20. Amazon.ca based the list on an analysis of sales data since Jan. 1, 2010 of romance novels, sex and relationship books, romantic comedy DVDs -and Michael Buble CDs.
To be fair, the list is based on a per capita basis in cities with more than 100,000 residents, meaning Niagara Falls wasn’t even eligible. more…

The Toronto Sun reported this week there’s a battle brewing at Queen’s Park over whether Ontario should legalize mixed martial arts, a move that would clear the way for the Ultimate Fighting Championship league to hold events in this province. If Ontario were to allow UFC matches, Niagara Falls would be a natural host.

On Feb 19th, Niagara Falls and St. Catherines are at a showdown to stir up the hottest chili to see who really has the beef. The event is this Friday from 11am-2pm, the winners at this event will move to St. Catherines for its downtown chili cook-off at Market Square. “Niagara Falls is a worthy opponent.” Mayor Ted Salci and Mayor Brian McMullan will also be one of the judges, judging while blindfolded. Last year, more than $3600 was raised for Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold.
Tickets are $10, including sampling and water, and ballot vote for people’s choice award.

NIAGARA FALLS — Gypsy Theatre’s stay in Niagara Falls may have been a short one.
After a much-ballyhooed debut on Queen Street last year, the Fort Erie-based company’s future in the Seneca Queen Theatre appears uncertain for 2010.
Mordechai Grun, president of property owners Historic Niagara Development, says while Gypsy Theatre “tried their best, and they worked hard,” he would not confirm the company is returning for a second season this year. more…

From February through April, ReNu Niagara will be hosting a free gardening workshop, Fresh Food for the Falls. The organic gardening will practice those who are beginning a garden or interested in learning how to make it more earth friendly. The classes are free from Feb 6 – Apr 24

Recently the city council had indicated that they would come door to door asking people to bring a shovel and help clear the sidewalks of snow. This stunt that would help to lower costs to cover snow plows and road salt distributions. Residents were outraged when they heard they were being ‘Forced’ to march outside and contribute to city hall. It was definitely a bad move by the city council. Where most costs are being spent on clearing the main roads and school routes, the public does not want to cut those services off. The issue is too much of a reliability and the liability of residents to perform that duty may fall short. That’s something we don’t want to see. Courts have been upheld that residents are not responsible for clearing snow and actions to do so are a personal choice or of that of the city’s duty. If a homeowner were to clear the snow from their sidewalk and a passer had fallen injured due to the ice, the city would get sued and not the home owner.
