This is video of the hidden entrance (east end) of the Blue Ghost Tunnel. Many people have been searching for directions but it really is one of those places that can’t be described. It’s a good hour long hike over streams and through dense forest.

Blue Ghost Tunnel Part 12

In this video, you can faintly hear what is presumed to be a child recorded on tape. It is in the background as the guy says the word nothing. EVP’s are not always clear when using your computer speakers. Use a good pair of headphones and see if you can hear it.

Blue Ghost Tunnel Part 10

This clip was recorded by Dennis (he posts here) at the Blue Ghost Tunnel in 2005. When playing back the tape, he heard a funny woosh sound so he listened to it over and over again to try and determine what it could be. He watched it over 20 times before he noticed this little orb shooting through the frame and behind the persons head at a very high rate of speed.

The orb is moving so fast, it can be very hard to see. It comes down from the top of the frame at an angle almost immediately when the video begins and is followed by the “woosh” sound about 1 second later. You can use the right and left arrows on your keyboard to move frame by frame. Hold down the arrows to have the video play at a slower speed. WATCH THIS VIDEO

Comment: This is feedback in response to the article that was published on Friday, September 30, 2005: “Black Hole into History” about the Blue Ghost Tunnel. I just found out yesterday from my sister that the tunnel is being sealed up. When asked why, she said that there was an article in the paper about it. Today I read the article and it blew my mind because it talks about making it a park, and going to museums and other things to preserve this piece of history for the people of Niagara. I know this is not true, for the construction to seal off of the blue Ghost Tunnel began yesterday. That is not fair to people who wish to fight the Seaway’s decision and find a way to save history, and the fact that it has not even been a week angers me. I have taken pictures there, and I used a shot of the tunnel in my portfolio for an interview for the Creative Photography program at Humber College which I am now enrolled in. The Blue Ghost
Tunnel is a beautiful place and having it sealed up breaks my heart, as I am in Toronto and cannot even be home to help fight to preserve the Blue Ghost Tunnel, which is an amazing piece of Niagara’s history. Why couldn’t they have given more time for the citizens of Niagara to fight for it?

Comment: In regards to your article “Black Hole into History” about the Blue Ghost Tunnel: I find it extremely offensive that your article was published on Friday September 30th, and the Seaway started sealing up the Tunnel on Monday morning, leaving anyone who wanted to offer alternate solutions or a chance to try and save the historic tunnel less than three days in which to protest. As someone who has hiked down to the tunnel on various occasions, I must say that a hike in the Niagara Gorge is far more dangerous even during the day than the hike to the Blue Ghost Tunnel is at night, but no-one seems to be sealing up the Niagara Gorge. I understand that it is an issue of liability, but what happened to the plans of Bruce Timms? Wasn’t he going to pitch an idea to Ottawa about giving all of the old canal lands in Niagara a federal historical designation? Did he manage to do that in the three days before the Seaway started walling up the Blue Ghost Tunnel? The Seaway is sealing off a beatiful piece of Niagara’s history, and hasn’t even given the citizens of Niagara a chance to state their opinions on the matter. While blocking up the Tunnel is a quick-fix, cheap solution for the St. Lawrence Seaway, I can’t see them getting sued in a period of three days. Couldn’t they have waited a little longer? With the pitch and a detailed report by the Niagara regional council still a few months away, the Seaway has already negated any attempts on the part of Niagara to save the historical site of the Blue Ghost Tunnel. So basically if the idea gets pitched and the federal government accepts, it will essentially be pointless, because I doubt that the beautiful structure of the Blue Ghost Tunnel would stand up very well to having the concrete seal broken down if the debate turns in favour of preserving it. But then again, it’s probably cheaper and faster to be small-minded, and to just wall it up and not let people in.

Blue Ghost Tunnel Part 7

This article is titled “Black Hole Into History” and appeared in the St. Catharines Standard on September 30, 2005. The same article appeared in the Welland tribune with the title “What Lurks In The Tunnel”. Only a few days would pass when the St. Lawrence Seaway began sealing the west end of the tunnel. This was the article that caused several angry letters to the editor in the days to come. More on this topic soon.

Even the fierce glare of the afternoon sun can’t banish the creepy chill lurking in the Blue Ghost Tunnel.
The former railway tunnel, curving into darkness under the third Welland Canal, boasts a slew of haunted hallmarks.
A historic train wreck complete with nasty fatalities, of course. Submerged graveyards just around the corner. A deliciously isolated location.

It even looks like a Hollywood horror director’s fondest nightmare. The yawning black hole into history is tucked away under a seldom-used dirt track, slowly losing a battle to encroaching plant life.
Crows get in on the act, crouching ominously in a couple of stark-limbed dead trees nearby.
You have to be a brave, chill-seeking soul to venture into the gaping mouth of the tunnel and not just because of its ghoulish reputation.

Blue Ghost Tunnel Part 6

This article is titled “Seaway Considers Sealing Off Tunnel To Stop Trespassing” and appeared in the St. Catharines Standard on September 14, 2005. This was the first article that mentioned the possibility of the tunnel being sealed. More articles on this topic coming soon.

Despite the Blue Ghost Tunnel’s ominous name it is not ancient spirits but young vandals haunting it, prompting the seaway security to request the landmark be sealed.

Kevin Valencourt of Niagara Amateur Ghost Seekers* said, after Creepy Canada portrayed the 1873 tunnel as “700 feet of hell on earth”, the place has become a favourite party spot for teenagers who drink beer, spray graffiti and leave trash all around.

“It’s just sickening to see a piece of history desecrated in such a fashion,” Valencourt said. “One night we were down there, somebody was handing out maps for a party. I’ve seen people dropping their children off there for a couple of hours.”

Blue Ghost Tunnel Part 5

No.4 Express Collides with a light Mogul Near Merritton Tunnel

On the Grand Trunk rail line near Merritton a serious and fatal accident occurred near the Merritton Tunnel today. The accident occurred around 7:03am at a point about 100 yards from the tunnels western entrance. Engine Number 975 was an 80 ton mogul train to leave from Niagara Falls at 6:00am each morning and run through to Hamilton.

Engine Number 4 express train was one of the best and fastest trains on the G.T. R. and was scheduled to arrive in Merritton at 6:28am. The Engineer’s name was Duke and the fireman that manned the boiler was Abraham Desult both from Sarnia. As nearly as can be learned it was 7:03 am when the ill-fated express train passed a small telegraph station near the tunnel,

A few moments later and almost one third of a mile down the track the engine of the express train and the light mogul train met with a terrible crash. Both engines at the time of the collision were in full steam when they met head on. The accident happened on a sharp curve where both engineers could not see each other for a distance of 200ft. The estimated speeds of both trains were about 22MPH at the time of the collision.

Both engineers escaped with only broken limbs and minor cuts to face and arms while Mr. Charles Horning (firemen) for the express train was killed instantly. The reporter described the condition of the body as being jammed between the boiler and tentler, his body was horribly mangled. When rescuers went to pull on the limbs of the man to try to free him they broke off. When some of the remains were taken away, his mid section was so tightly wedged between the tentler and boiler that his remaining body could not be pulled free. It was even noted that his watch on one of his arms was still working……

The other firemen (Abraham Desult) from the mogal train was smashed into the boiler of the train, and received burns to 90% of his body. He was rushed to the St.Catharines General Hospital where he died 5 hours after the accident.

Another Wreck For The Grand Trunk

The wreck on the Grand Trunk at Merritton tunnel this morning has added greatly to the general uneasiness regarding the condition of affairs on the Grand Trunk system, which has caused four wrecks in a week—Wanstead, Victoria Bridge, Toronto and now Merritton. Some of the Grand Trunk men lay the blame for the accidents to the indroduction…… (sorry this is all I have of this news article)

Blue Ghost Tunnel Part 3

In this video you can hear voices recorded that was not heard while in the tunnel. A voice says “it got colder” which it did at the moment and then the girl says she feels someone is standing next to her and you hear a faint voice say “It’s me”. Turn it up loud and hear these very chilling EVP’s.
