Famous Friday – The Great Farini

Name: William Leonard Hunt
Birth Date: June 10, 1838
Place of Birth: Lockport, New York
Claim to Fame: Also known as the Great Farini, William Hunt, made several tightrope performances at Niagara Falls. His feats included crossing a high wire with a man on his back, with a sack over his entire body, turning somersaults while on the rope, hanging from it by his feet, and even lowering a bucket into the Niagara River and using the water to wash his handkerchiefs.

Smingus Dyngus Day

Just in case you missed Smingus Dingus Day, Buffalo Rising was able to provide us with some pictures from celebrations in Buffalo NY.

The World’s largest Dyngus Day Celebration proved to be another exceptional event held throughout the city and region. Record setting numbers came out to enjoy dozens of festivities during Easter Monday’s unseasonably mild weather.

The Canadian dollar is set to reach parity with the U.S in the near future.  Shoppers should be planning to cross the boarder to the US  for shopping sprees.  This could be good news for Americans and not so good news for businesses North of the border in Canada. But if you’re still looking for the cheapest coffee Tim Hortons still strings a cheaper cost on the Canadian side.

50th Anniversary of the Playboy Bunny June 10th, Niagara Falls’ Fallsview Casino will be celebrating the Playboy Club’s 50th anniversary.

Playboy will be hosting 50 parties this year to celebrate, other cities will include Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Cancun and Chicago.

The casino will be transformed to look like an up scale Playboy Club, as well as 30 playboy bunnies and 4 playboy playmates that will dance alongside the party until the morning hours.

The event will also include $25,000 cash draw prizes and opportunities to meet some of the celebrities .

1993 Hockey Brawl Between Sarnia and Niagara Falls

A 1993 Western Ontario Hockey League game between Sarnia Ranson Bees (blue) and the Niagara Falls All Stars (white). The fight started when a Sarnia player hit a Niagara Falls player from behind. A Niagara Falls player retaliated with a elbow and all hell broke loose.

A familiar sign of spring and what follows is the Niagara Outdoor Show. If you hunt, fish or boat this event is a must see. From rods, reels and lures at clearance prices to the Casting Kids Contest(Sunday)presented by the Niagara Bassmasters, there`s something for everyone. Enjoy one of the fishing seminars with local pros or maybe write your Boating Test(card required by Sept.15/2009). You can bring your antique lures along and have them appraised at no charge by an expert. Officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources will be present to address your questions concerning our outdoor environment and how it relates to wildlife. Admission is $5 and if you`re under 16, it`s free. See you there!!!

Famous Friday – Sir Casimir S. Gzowski


Name: Sir Kazimierz Stanislaus Gzowski
Birth Date: March 5, 1813
Place of Birth: Saint Petersburg, Russia
Claim to Fame: First chairman of the Niagara Parks Commission (1885-93) Gzowski was born in Russia of Polish parents. Forced to emigrate, following participation in the Polish Rising of 1830, he came to Canada in 1841. An exceptionally able engineer, he first served as a government construction superintendent. He later organized a company which built the Grand Trunk Railway from Toronto to Sarnia, 1853-7, and the International Bridge across the Niagara River at Fort Erie in 1873. He was a founder of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers in 1887. A colonel in the Canadian militia, he was appointed Honorary Aide-de-Camp to the Queen in 1879 and knighted in 1890. Gzowski served as Administrator of Ontario 1896-97. more…

RSM Queen Mary to replace the Maid of the Mist

The famous ocean liner, RMS Queen Mary, has been brought our of retirement to replace the Maid of the Mist. It docked early this morning and welcomed its first passengers.

No More Line-ups

The 81 ton Queen Mary has the capacity to accommodate 90,000 passengers per hour.  That’s 30 times more than the Maid of the Mist.
