Locals Know Deals

The 2009 winter campaign has just kicked off.  The site encourages Canadians to share and seek out their favourite winter places and experiences. Its goals: a shot in the arm to both Canada’s winter tourist economy and the media industry, plus amplifying any existing programs run by partners.

Here are some great local Niagara Falls Deals that we discovered:

Rosbergs Department Store Fire

Video news coverage of the Rosbergs Department Store Fire:

Save the ‘Bou

A new online campaign titled, “Save the Bou,” is hoping to send 1,000s of email to Premier McGuinty urging him to take action and protect the Caribou.
The same Woodland Caribou that appears on the quarter in your pocket is quickly disappearing from the southern Boreal Forest of Ontario (just 5000 remaining), despite a promise from Premier McGuinty, over two years ago, to protect the animal’s habitat. more…

Video of a couple renewing  their wedding vows on-board the Maid of the Mist.

I wonder if Pam & Jim got their idea from Malu & Luis?

UFO Over Niagara Falls

Flashing Lights = Aliens?

It’s probably Ruedi Hafen taking his helicopter for a late night flight.  Whatever it was it was newsworthy enough to make it on WKBW news.

Olympic Torch – Niagara Falls Dec. 20th

torchThe sacred Olympic Flame is lit in an ancient ritual in Olympia, Greece, site of the first Olympic Games. After a short run through Greece, the Olympic Flame arrives in Athens, where it is handed over to a representative from the Host Country.

From there, the Olympic Flame will make a trans-Atlantic flight and arrive in October 30th in Victoria BC, signaling the start of the longest Olympic Torch Relay to take place in a single country. It will make its 106 day journey across Canada, stopping at many towns and cities making it possible for 90% of Canadians to see it.

The torch is due to arrive in Niagara Falls the evening of December 20th, 2009.

Maid of the Mist Closes

October 25th will be the final day the Maid of the Mist will be running this year, but it will be back for at least 25 more years. Earlier this month  the Niagara Parks Commission extended the lease to the America company for another 25 years.  There is controversy around this deal because the offer was not offered to the public in a standard bid process.  Apparently some investors would have paid $100 million higher for the lease if they were given the chance.

Rescued Katrina Dogs Trigger Heartworm Epidemic

According to the Hamilton Academy of Veterinarian Medicine (HAVM) in Canada, a “huge increase” in heartworm disease in dogs – 10 times the normal in 2008 – threatens to reach epidemic proportions and will take years to curtail.

The prime reason: Abandoned dogs imported from Louisiana into Canada by the Hamilton SPCA after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which hadn’t been adequately tested, and carried the disease that is spread by mosquitoes.

What started as a humanitarian gesture, importing Louisiana dogs has become a fixture with humane societies in Southern Ontario – St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, Fort Erie and even Cambridge and Guelph. more…

Niagara Blogosphere

The blogosphere is made up of all blogs and their interconnections. The term implies that blogs exist together as a connected community (or as a collection of connected communities) or as a social network in which everyday authors can publish their opinions.

Here are some recent contributions to the Niagara Falls blogosphere that caught our eye:

Frog Creek Blog -Details a 6 day family adventure that includes upstate new York, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa.  The trip included eating poutine, a biodome, carriage ride, a water park, maid of the mist, and Canadian beer. Sounds like a great time.

12 Stupid Things – These guys set out to do 12 stupid things each month. In September one of the stupid things was to do the Tour de Greenbelt (warning: site has annoying music).  The routes are 23, 50, or 100 km and are between Toronto and Niagara Falls.

This post falls under celebrity spotting. Got Sparkles has pics of Gil Birmingham from the movie Twilight.

The Office Update

If you watched the Office last night you may have wondered where they came up with the wedding entrance dance. It came from this viral video:
