Flashing Lights = Aliens?
It’s probably Ruedi Hafen taking his helicopter for a late night flight. Whatever it was it was newsworthy enough to make it on WKBW news.
A follow-up to our previous post, the Tourism Minister Monique Smith and Premier McGuinty have forced the commission to open up bidding for the Maid of the Mist lease. Read the full Globe and Mail article here.
Last week’s Doors Open Niagara event was a great success. Hopefully some of you had a chance to participate. Check out some of these amazing pics and video from Flickr.
The sacred Olympic Flame is lit in an ancient ritual in Olympia, Greece, site of the first Olympic Games. After a short run through Greece, the Olympic Flame arrives in Athens, where it is handed over to a representative from the Host Country.
From there, the Olympic Flame will make a trans-Atlantic flight and arrive in October 30th in Victoria BC, signaling the start of the longest Olympic Torch Relay to take place in a single country. It will make its 106 day journey across Canada, stopping at many towns and cities making it possible for 90% of Canadians to see it.
The torch is due to arrive in Niagara Falls the evening of December 20th, 2009.
October 25th will be the final day the Maid of the Mist will be running this year, but it will be back for at least 25 more years. Earlier this month the Niagara Parks Commission extended the lease to the America company for another 25 years. There is controversy around this deal because the offer was not offered to the public in a standard bid process. Apparently some investors would have paid $100 million higher for the lease if they were given the chance.

The only marathon in the world that starts in one country and finishes in another.
Do you think you can beat Matt Loiselle’s time of 2:27:33 or Elizabeth Primrose’s time of 2:55:26.6? Yes, that’s right. They can run 42 km (26 miles) in under 3 hours.
The marathon starts at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo N.Y. The first 6.5km (4 miles) of the race travel the majestic parkways of Buffalo before crossing the Peace Bridge into the historic old town of Fort Erie, Ontario. The route then follows the beautiful Niagara River Parkway and finishes at the magnificent Niagara Falls.
If a marathon is a little too much for you can sign up for the 5km or 10km run.

According to the Hamilton Academy of Veterinarian Medicine (HAVM) in Canada, a “huge increase” in heartworm disease in dogs – 10 times the normal in 2008 – threatens to reach epidemic proportions and will take years to curtail.
The prime reason: Abandoned dogs imported from Louisiana into Canada by the Hamilton SPCA after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which hadn’t been adequately tested, and carried the disease that is spread by mosquitoes.
What started as a humanitarian gesture, importing Louisiana dogs has become a fixture with humane societies in Southern Ontario – St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, Fort Erie and even Cambridge and Guelph. more…
The blogosphere is made up of all blogs and their interconnections. The term implies that blogs exist together as a connected community (or as a collection of connected communities) or as a social network in which everyday authors can publish their opinions.
Here are some recent contributions to the Niagara Falls blogosphere that caught our eye:
Frog Creek Blog -Details a 6 day family adventure that includes upstate new York, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. The trip included eating poutine, a biodome, carriage ride, a water park, maid of the mist, and Canadian beer. Sounds like a great time.
12 Stupid Things – These guys set out to do 12 stupid things each month. In September one of the stupid things was to do the Tour de Greenbelt (warning: site has annoying music). The routes are 23, 50, or 100 km and are between Toronto and Niagara Falls.
This post falls under celebrity spotting. Got Sparkles has pics of Gil Birmingham from the movie Twilight.
If you watched the Office last night you may have wondered where they came up with the wedding entrance dance. It came from this viral video:

After five seasons of adorably awkward courtship, TV’s cutest couple are finally making it official. Thursday October 8th, NBC will air the long-awaited wedding of Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam’s (Jenna Fischer).
Check out their wedding site. It even has a “Things to Do in the Area” section.

The Canadian Tourism Commission has taken a new approach in marketing Canada as a vacation destination. They are targeting free independent travelers through blogs and videos. Recently they sponsored 8 well known bloggers from South Korea to visit and write about Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.
The first to visit Ontario was Won Kyun Chun. She has already posted a few stories. Jin Hyun Han, Kum Ran Son, Yong-Chul Kim, Sang Gu Jung, Ja Young Lee and Won Goo Kang will follow.
I can’t wait to see what they have to say about Niagara Falls.
